How can I apply?
The local Rotary Club in each community select student's applications in confidence. The number of students selected from each community will depend on the number of awards the local Rotary Club has to give out. Generally, each local Rotary club sends applicants from high schools in their local area. Students who wish to apply may want to contact the Rotary Club in their local area. If you don't know your local Rotary Club contact, please feel free to e-mail us (UtahRYLA@gmail.com) and we will do our best to connect you with a local club. Please note, there are no guarantees you will be selected or contacted. In your e-mail, please include your name, high school, phone number, and how you learned about RYLA!

Who is eligible?
  • Participants must be enrolled as a student or be home-schooled in a community that is located within the state of Utah.
  • RYLA is targeted for students who will be Juniors in the 2016-2017 school year, to develop them as leaders for the last half of their High School careers, and who may be invited back to serve as Alumni in their Senior year. Sophomores who are interested in going on a Rotary Youth Exchange in their Junior year, or are eager to get involved in Interact Service Club leadership are also encouraged to apply. Seniors for whom this will be their opportunity to attend RYLA will also be seriously considered. Freshmen are generally too young to function effectively and are encouraged to wait a year before applying.

What should I pack or not?
  • Sleeping bag, pillow, sleeping pad/mat to fit a bunk bed (the bunks have plywood bases that are very very hard to sleep on without a thick foam pad or air mattress)
  • Toiletries (i.e. toothbrush, soap, shampoo, etc.)
  • Walking shoes/hiking boots (close toed shoes are required on ropes course). We are in the mountains!
  • Clothes for 3 days. Dress is casual (i.e. jeans, t-shirt, sweats. Shorts are ok.)
  • Warm clothes/rain jacket – it can get freezing at night, but may be very warm in the afternoons, dressing in layers is ideal.
  • Flashlight
  • Camera (smart phone cameras are welcome)
  • NO phone calls during scheduled programming (there is little or no service in the mountains at the Heber Valley Camp). IPods, or other electronic devices should be left at home.
